Cherry Blossom Season
Last year, I photographed the first blooming cherry blossom of the season on March 13. It was an uninteresting picture, but I was so excited to see the tiny branch of flowers that I shelled out an instax-mini shot of it as well as a digital version. Even now, I get a little feeling of excitement looking at that photo, which occupies a space on my wall dedicated to instant photographs of flowers.
Spring is my absolute favourite time of year, both as a photographer and a general Vancouverite. The cherry blossom trees throughout the city bloom at different times, so there’s beautiful floral scenes for my photoshoots for nearly three months straight.
One of my favourite resources for cherry-blossom location scouting is the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Map (https://www.vcbf.ca/blooming-now/neighbourhood-maps). This map has a pin for almost every flowering tree in Vancouver indicating where they are and when they are typically in bloom.
I do my best to take full advantage of this gorgeous time of year. Last year, I did a shoot once every three days throughout the season, totalling 22 sets with 20 different models. If you’re interested in booking a photoshoot in the coming months, I would highly recommend shooting outdoors and embracing the beauty of the season.
I have a section of my costume closet dedicated to cherry-blossom inspired outfits that I have acquired specifically for spring photoshoots. I have options available in a variety of sizes and styles, and I am happy to provide some outfit options for clients who are interested in custom wardrobe styling.
It will also be possible to do indoor-outdoor hybrid shoots during cherry blossom season, as there are flowering trees only a short walk from my studio. I look forward to using my favourite powder-pink backdrop paper for studio sets that compliment shots taken outdoors among the beautiful trees.
