Three Dimensional Sets
One of the more exciting concepts that I began exploring this year is the idea of three-dimensional suspended sets. As soon as this concept came to me, I became somewhat obsessed with it.
The next day, I purchased a second studio backdrop and a roll of duct tape and began designing the first set. The concept is simple: set up two studio backdrops a few feet apart, use duct tape to affix cross bars between them, and hang various items and drapery off of the cross bars so they fall into the frame. These sets are perfect for creating layers within a portrait image.
One rule that I have followed religiously is that nothing in these sets is purchased first-hand. Reduce and Reuse are huge components of my artistic philosophy, and as tempting as it is to buy things like fake flowers + plants for cheap from the Dollartree, I believe that it is worth the time and money to find these things by trawling thrift stores instead. This has made my 3D set dreams slightly harder to achieve, but I am proud of how they have turned out nonetheless.
So far, my two largest 3D sets have been an Enchanted Forest for a fairy themed collaboration, and a gold ballroom for my Christmas themed collaboration. After having success with these two sets, I am inspired to continue the 3D set design into the New Year. On the roster for the next few months I have an underwater-themed set and a rain-themed set. I don’t want to give too much away about how these will look, but suffice to say I am very excited to make them a reality sometime soon.
